How hourly, monthly and annual pay are converted
Everything goes through the hourly rate. Annual pay is the hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks per year. Weekly pay is the hourly rate × hours per week, and daily pay is the hourly rate × hours per day (hours per week ÷ days per week). Monthly pay is annual pay ÷ 12 — a month averages about 4.33 weeks, so multiplying weekly pay by 4 understates it.
Example: $25 an hour at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 a year, which is $4,333.33 a month, $1,000 a week and $200 a day. Going the other way, a salary of ₹50,000 a month for a 48-hour, six-day week is ₹6,00,000 a year ÷ 2,496 hours = ₹240.38 an hour.
How many working hours are in a year?
A 40-hour week over 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, which is why “divide the annual salary by 2,080” is a common shortcut in the US. A 48-hour week, common in India and the Gulf, is 2,496 hours, and a 37.5-hour UK week is 1,950. If you don’t get paid for time off, lower the paid weeks per year — the hourly rate stays the same, but your yearly total falls.
Comparing a salaried job with hourly or freelance work
A salaried job usually includes paid leave and benefits, while hourly and freelance work often doesn’t. To compare fairly, convert the salary to an hourly rate using the hours you would really work, then set paid weeks to the weeks you would actually bill as a freelancer.
Frequently asked questions
- Why doesn’t monthly pay equal weekly pay × 4?
- Most months are longer than four weeks. A year has 52 weeks, so the average month has 52 ÷ 12 ≈ 4.33 weeks. Using 4 would make your monthly pay look about 8% lower than it is.
- Should I include paid holidays?
- Yes. If you are paid during holidays and leave, keep 52 paid weeks. Only reduce it for unpaid weeks off, such as unpaid leave or gaps between contracts.
- Is this before or after tax?
- Before tax. Taxes and deductions depend on your country and situation, so the converter works with gross pay only.
- Does it account for overtime?
- Not separately. If you regularly work paid overtime, add those hours to your weekly hours — or work out your overtime pay from the hourly rate shown here.
