How a salary hike is calculated

A hike is a percentage of your current salary. To find your new salary, multiply your current salary by (1 + hike ÷ 100). To find the hike you were given, take the difference between the new and old salary, divide it by the old salary and multiply by 100. The calculator works the same way for monthly or annual pay and in any currency.

Example: a 12% hike on ₹6,00,000 a year adds ₹72,000, so the new salary is ₹6,72,000 (₹56,000 a month). In reverse, if your monthly pay goes from $5,000 to $5,800, the hike is ($5,800 − $5,000) ÷ $5,000 × 100 = 16%.

To see what the raise is really worth, the calculator also adjusts for inflation: real raise = (1 + hike) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1. A 12% hike with 5% inflation is a real raise of about 6.67%, because prices went up too.

What is a good salary hike?

A raise that only matches inflation keeps your buying power the same — anything above it is a real increase. Annual increments vary a lot by country, industry and performance, while job switches and promotions usually bring bigger jumps. Use the comparison table to see what different percentages mean in money before you negotiate.

Hike on CTC or on in-hand salary?

Offers in India usually quote the hike on CTC. Your in-hand pay may rise by a different percentage because PF, tax and variable pay change too. Enter the same type of figure — CTC or in-hand — for both the old and new salary.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 10% hike on top of a 10% hike the same as 20%?
No, it is slightly more: 1.10 × 1.10 = 1.21, so two 10% raises add up to 21%, because the second raise is on the higher salary.
How do I undo a percentage cut?
A cut needs a bigger percentage to recover. After a 20% cut, you need a 25% hike to get back to the original pay. Choose “Find hike %” and enter both salaries to check.
Why is my new monthly salary different from what I expected?
The calculator works on gross pay. Your take-home pay also depends on taxes and deductions, which may rise faster than your salary if you move into a higher tax band.
