How the savings goal calculator works
The calculator assumes you put the same amount aside at the start of every month and that it earns your expected yearly return, compounded monthly. Money you have already saved for the goal keeps growing too, so only the gap between the goal and what your current savings will become has to come from new deposits.
In Monthly saving needed mode you choose the deadline and it finds the deposit. In Time to reach goal mode you choose the deposit and it counts the months until your balance first reaches the goal.
Example: to collect ₹10,00,000 in 5 years with ₹1,00,000 already saved and an 8% yearly return, the ₹1,00,000 grows to about ₹1,46,933, so you need to save about ₹11,620 a month. Turned around, saving ₹12,000 a month gets you there in 4 years and 11 months.
Should I allow for rising prices?
If your goal is something whose price climbs every year — college fees, a car, a holiday — set a price rise. The same ₹10 lakh goal rising 6% a year costs about ₹13.38 lakh in 5 years and needs ₹16,227 a month instead of ₹11,620. For a fixed sum, such as a loan you must repay, leave it at 0%.
Where should I keep money for a goal?
A common approach is to match the investment to the time left: savings accounts or deposits for goals under about three years, and a mix that includes equity for goals further away, moving to safer options as the deadline approaches. Use a lower return for short goals so the plan does not depend on a good year in the market.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the monthly amount less than goal ÷ months?
- Because each deposit earns returns until the deadline. The earlier deposits work the longest, so returns cover part of the goal.
- What if I can only save a fixed amount?
- Switch to Time to reach goal and enter what you can afford. You will see how long it takes and how much of the final amount comes from returns.
- Does it account for tax on interest?
- Not separately. Enter the return you expect after tax — for example, 7% interest taxed at 30% leaves about 4.9%.
- I save at the end of the month, not the start. Does it matter?
- Only slightly — each deposit earns one month less, so you would need to save a little more (under 1% more at an 8% return).
